Approximately 25% of our community members are seniors, and by 2030 this is expected to approach 30%. As the community of Seniors has grown, it’s become increasingly important to have specialists at the Senior Center available to help Seniors navigate through the complicated myriad of paperwork required to maintain an healthy independent lifestyle in retirement.
Many Seniors want to live in the community they’ve spent a lifetime building, and while there are a few market-rate and affordable senior-oriented living opportunities in Town, the remains a much higher demand than available supply of homes. I will continue to advocate for increasing affordable Senior housing options in Lunenburg!
Senior Tax Relief – Many Seniors feel like living a long life has come with a tax penalty: taxes seem to increase 10% every five years while fixed incomes increase by only 4-6%. Many Seniors know that taxes are now higher than their mortgages ever were, and we need to offer our Seniors Tax Relief!
In 2021, I supported the creation of an working group that is explore how to provide meaningful tax relief to our most vulnerable seniors and to those of average means. And I’m committed to exploring how to develop a large solar field at the old town dump so that we can commit a portion of the revenue to offset taxes for Seniors over 70 on a fixed income.
